In esoteric mysticism, spiritual ascension is the term used for the process of becoming spiritually awakened or enlightened. It is a gradual process that often involves a series of awakenings or insights, leading to a fuller understanding of the divine. Ascending to a higher level of awareness can be seen as an act of self-actualization and liberation from egoism and materialism.
The aspirant may undergo many stages on the spiritual path, including purification, illumination, initiation, and finally union with God. Each stage is necessary to reach ultimate enlightenment. The ultimate goal is to achieve kenosis-the emptying of one’s self to merge with the divine.
