Types of Affective Disorders?
There are many types of affective disorders, and they can vary in severity. Some common types of affective disorders include major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder, dysthymia, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Each type of affective disorder has its own set of symptoms and requires a different approach to treatment.
Major depressive disorder is the most common type of affective disorder and is characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness or depression. People with MDD often have low energy, difficulty concentrating, and significant changes in appetite and sleeping habits. They may also experience irritability, guilt, and feelings of worthlessness.
Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness that affects about 1 in every 500 people in the United States. People with bipolar disorder experience extreme mood swings from extremely happy to extremely angry called mania or hypomania, and a deep depression called depression. During mania, people may feel like they can do anything, be near anyone, or have any kind of sexual encounter they want. They may also have extreme energy levels and decreased need for sleep. In contrast, during the depression, people may feel hopeless and unmotivated.
